Horizontal and vertical boring mills are powerful machines capable of removing massive amounts of material from large castings. Because of the size of the cutting tools and the weight of the workpieces, safety must always be the top priority in any facility operating boring mills.
1. Secure Workpiece Clamping
Always double-check the clamping setup. Boring mills apply extreme torque during heavy boring cuts. An improperly secured workpiece can shift or be thrown from the table, causing catastrophic machine damage and severe injury.
2. Proper Guarding and Enclosures
Ensure all safety doors and interlocks are operational. Flight chips and hot coolant spray are common hazards during deep boring operations. Modern CNC boring mills feature transparent polycarbonate shielding to protect operators.
3. Clearance and Collision Checks
Before executing any program, perform dry runs (air cuts) with the Z-axis offset. Verify tool clearances to prevent the boring head from colliding with the rotary table or fixtures.
