Gears are fundamental components in automotive gearboxes, wind turbines, and aerospace actuators. Producing them requires high positional accuracy and smooth surface profiles. Over the past few decades, the technology used to manufacture these components has shifted significantly from mechanical systems to electronic CNC systems.

Traditional Mechanical Gear Hobbing

Traditional gear hobbers rely on a complex network of change gears, index wheels, and mechanical linkages to synchronize the rotation of the cutting tool (hob) with the workpiece. Setup times on these machines are famously long, requiring skilled machinists to calculate and change gears manually for different tooth profiles.

The CNC Gear Hobbing Revolution

Modern CNC gear hobbing machines replace mechanical gearboxes with independent, electronically synchronized servo motors. This electronic gearbox (EGB) synchronizes the spindle and the workpiece axis in real-time. Benefits include:

  • Rapid Setup Times: Changing profiles is as simple as loading a new program from the controller.
  • Higher Accuracy: No backlash from worn mechanical change gears, resulting in gears that run quieter and last longer.
  • Complex Geometries: Easily generate helical gears, crown gears, and custom tooth shapes that were virtually impossible on mechanical hobbers.

While CNC systems are superior, high-quality rebuilt mechanical gear hobbers from legendary brands like Pfauter or Liebherr remain popular in smaller shops due to their extreme durability and lower entry cost.
