Drilling holes in high-strength alloys or structural steel blocks requires bits that can withstand high friction and heat. Choosing the wrong tool leads to rapid wear, broken bits, and ruined workpieces. Here is our guide to drill bit materials for heavy engineering.

Material Breakdown

  • High-Speed Steel (HSS): Best for general-purpose drilling in softer metals and plastics. Highly economical but loses hardness at high temperatures.
  • Cobalt: Contain 5-8% cobalt, allowing them to maintain hardness even under extreme heat. Ideal for drilling stainless steel and cast iron.
  • Carbide: Exceptionally hard and brittle. Can run at high speeds and drill the hardest materials, but require rigid setups (like radial drills or CNCs) to prevent chipping.
